James J. Kao, D.O., P.C.
Dr. James Kao is a fellowship trained corneal and refractive surgeon with extensive experience in LASIK and other anterior segment surgeries. He has performed more than 22,000 LASIK procedures and is certified on all five of the excimer lasers and all microkeratomes approved for use in the United States. Additionally he is one of the first surgeons in California to be certified on and regularly using the IntraLase laser for blade-free LASIK. He has also had LASIK surgery himself, and has performed the procedure on numerous family members and colleagues.
A native of Scarsdale, New York, Dr. James Kao earned his undergraduate degree at Cornell University and a Master’s degree in Public Health from George Washington University. He then pursued medical training, first completing a Doctorate of Osteopathic Medicine at Western University College of Osteopathic Medicine in California, and then a medical degree from International University of Health Sciences
Dr. James Kao went on to serve a residency in ophthalmology at Michigan State University and specialty training through a fellowship in cornea, anterior segment and refractive surgery at the University of Cincinnati in Ohio.
Before joining LASIK Today, Dr. James Kao provided ophthalmology services for children and adults at various practices in Michigan, Ohio, and California. He also conducted numerous research and quality control studies related to vision care, and participated in research and development efforts as early as 1990 as a Consultant to Chiron Vision and Bausch & Lomb. He has several patents pending for both surgical instruments and medical devices related to ophthalmology. In addition to LASIK surgery, Dr. Kao is skilled at performing cataract surgery, LASIK, PRK, epiLASIK, Near Vision CK, Visian ICL, Intacs, and other procedures.
In the community, Dr. Kao is actively involved as a volunteer with many charitable organizations. In 2005, Dr. Kao received the Bravo Award for Bravery from the American Red Cross. Dr. James Kao is fluent in English and speaks Mandarin Chinese, Spanish, Cantonese, Vietnamese, and Japanese.
